SEARCH FOR MISSING MALE, POTENTIALLY SUICIDAL.
28.11.2009

Selsey all weather lifeboat “Voluntary Worker” launched at 1828 to assist in a search for a missing male who had rung the police threatening to kill himself. The police had heard the sound of what they thought were waves in the background of the conversation and the call had been traced to the Bracklesham/Wittering area.

Selsey lifeboat arrived offshore at the Windmill Selsey at 1840 and started searching to the west parallel to the shore approximately 200 yards off the beach. The Coastguard helicopter and Hayling Island lifeboat were also on scene although surf conditions close in were too great for the Hayling Island Atlantic Lifeboat to operate safely, Selsey Coastguard team carried out a search of the beach. “Voluntary Worker” and the helicopter searched amongst the heavy surf for just over an hour until at 1935 all units were stood down as the casualty was found ashore at Bosham.

Unable to rehouse, the Selsey lifeboat went into Sparkes Marina, Chichester Harbour, to wait until the low water. Hayling crew invited us to join them at their boathouse; where we stayed until midnight. Voluntary Worker left Sparkes Marina at 00:15 to return to station, arriving back at 01:35 Sunday 29th and rehousing at 02:00. Ready for service at 02:45.

CREW: M.Rudwick (Coxswain), W.Pledger (2nd Coxswain), J.Albery (Mechanic), D.Lamdin, P.Delahunty, G.Mellett, G.Pearce.

POSSIBLE SUICIDE ATTEMPT.
22.11.2009.

At 2123 Selsey lifeboat crew were called to assist in a possible suicide attempt with a potential female casualty.

Thankfully at 2130 just as the inshore lifeboat “ Betty and Thomas Moore” was about to enter the water the casualty was safely apprehended by local police on the seawall at East Beach.

The lifeboat and crew were stood down; the lifeboat was rehoused and was made ready for service once more at 2145.

CREW: P.Delahunty (Helmsman), R.Archibald, W.Moir.

WIND: Southwest 6-7. SEA: Smooth. WEATHER: Cloudy with heavy rain showers.

REPORT OF TWO YOUNG BOYS SWEPT INTO THE SEA.
24.10.09

Selsey reserve inshore lifeboat “Jenny Topham” launched at 1825 to investigate a 999 call from a member of the public reporting two young boys had been swept into the sea from the boat-launching ramp at West Sands. Selsey all weather lifeboat “Voluntary Worker” also launched at 1830 to support the ILB, as conditions were close to the inshore lifeboats maximum operating limits also it would soon be dark.

The ILB was on scene at 1833 and the crew started searching the area close to the launching ramp. At this time with little daylight left the lifeboat and crew were in shallow water with large breaking waves. The ALB arrived on scene at 1838 but due to the lack of depth of water and sea conditions was unable to close the shore closer than approximately 200 metres off.

Thankfully at 1848 both boats were released to return to station as the two young boys had been found safe and well by the local Coastguard team who were searching the shoreline. It transpired that the first informant had seen the boys playing on the ramp then looked away and when he looked again they were nowhere to be seen. Due to the rough sea conditions he had assumed the worst and had correctly called 999 for assistance, in fact the two boys had just gone to play elsewhere. A false alarm with good intent.

REPORT OF A CAPSIZED DINGHY.
21.10.09.

Selsey reserve inshore lifeboat “Jenny Topham” was requested to launch at 2003 by Solent Coastguards to investigate a 999 call received from a public telephone in Grafton Road from an angler who had been fishing on the beach at the end of Grafton Road saying he had seen a capsized dinghy drifting past approximately 20 metres offshore. The angler then said he was returning to the beach to keep track of the dinghy.

The ILB arrived on scene at 2010 and carried out a search close to the shore between Hillfield Road and the lifeboat station. The all weather lifeboat returning from exercise also joined in and searched as close in as possible between the Bill point and the lifeboat station. At 2032 with nothing being found in the water and the local coastguard team searching along the beach not able to find the angler all search units were stood down to return to station. The ILB rehoused at 2045 and the ALB at 2050, both boats were ready for service by 2115.

It is probable that this incident was a hoax.

23-FOOT POWER BOAT BROKEN DOWN.
13/10/09.

Selsey all weather lifeboat “Voluntary Worker” launched at 1344 to go to the assistance of a 23-foot power boat “Jessie Louise” broken down with three persons on board approximately 3 miles southeast of the station.

The lifeboat was on scene at 1400 and a towline was connected. Unable to enter Littlehampton Harbour due to tidal conditions a course was set for Chichester Harbour. During the tow it was arranged for Chichester Harbour patrol to take the tow off of us and to continue towing the casualty up to the Chichester Marina where it had its own berth. At 1545 just inside the harbour the tow was transferred to the harbour patrol vessel. The lifeboat was released to return to station arriving back at 1630, rehoused straight away and was ready for service once more at 1515.

MAYDAY FROM 30 FOOT YACHT “JUBAMANZI”.

Selsey all weather lifeboat “ Voluntary Worker” launched at 1200 to respond to a Mayday call from the 30-foot yacht “Jubamanzi” reported to be taking on water with three male crew onboard approximately 4 miles south of the station. The coastguard helicopter “Rescue 104” was also scrambled.

Rescue 104 was on scene at 1210 and hovered in the vicinity of the casualty until the lifeboat arrived at approximately 1220. Once on scene the casualty was asked if they required two of the lifeboat crew and a pump to be transferred to them, they declined saying that the ingress of water appeared to have stopped and that they were now checking for possible leaks.

At 1225 rescue 104 was released to return to its base. The lifeboat remained in close proximity to the casualty. At 1230 the crew of “Jubamanzi” confirmed that the ingress of water had ceased and that they were going to set a course for Chichester Harbour. It was agreed that the lifeboat should escort them in case their situation changed. At 1251 the crew on the casualty reported that the yacht was now pumped dry with no sign of water ingress and that they were now happy to return to their home port of Gosport Marina unaccompanied.

Voluntary Worker remained with them for a bit longer before being released at 1310 and returning to station, arriving back at 1325 rehousing straight away and was made ready for service once more at 1415.

SUICIDE ATTEMPT OFF OF BOATHOUSE GANGWAY.
18.09.09

The lifeboat crew were paged at 2316, on arriving at the station we were met by local Coastguards who informed us of a possible suicidal 20-year-old male threatening to jump into the sea from the gangway of the all weather lifeboat station. Police were with him and attempting to talk him out of jumping.

The inshore lifeboat and crew were prepared for sea and discreetly pushed out from the boathouse in readiness should the youth decide to jump.

At 1128 the lifeboat and crew were stood down as the Police had apprehended the youth and were taking him into safe custody.

The ILB was put away and was ready for service once more at 2340.

38’ Yacht “Rhymhor”
Tuesday 8th September 2009.

Selsey Inshore lifeboat D-691 “Betty and Thomas Moore” launched at 18.45 to assist the yacht “Rhymhor” with 2 persons aboard, aground on the Mixon rocks. After arriving on scene at 19.00 and establishing the yacht was hard aground, it was decided to allow the casualty to re-float on the incoming tide. The yacht's anchor was deployed by the crew of the ilb to prevent her from being pushed further inshore as she began to re-float. At 19.11 the ILB requested the assistance of the All-Weather lifeboat “Voluntary Worker”. One person from the “Rhymhor” was taken ashore due to having an existing injury and met by the coastguards. The other was taken aboard the ALB. The yacht re-floated at 22.20 on the incoming tide and a tow was attached by the ILB. Once into deeper water the tow was passed onto the ALB to continue to Selsey. At 2302 the yacht was placed on the mooring. At 2304 the ALB re-housed and was ready for service again at 2330. The ILB returned the “Rhymhor” crew to the vessel at 2330, re-housed at 2345 and was ready for service again at 0005.

40ft converted harbour launch “Trizl”
Saturday 5th September 2009.

Both Selsey Lifeboats were requested to launch at 1900 to a 40ft converted harbour launch “Trizl” that had gone aground near the Mixon Rocks.
The Inshore lifeboat assisted the “Trizl” into deeper water, placed a crew member aboard to check for damage and escorted them to a position ½ a mile south of the Mixon beacon. After discovering that there was damage to the hull, Selsey All Weather Lifeboat took over. The ILB crew member stayed onboard the casualty. The ILB returned to station.
The All weather lifeboat escorted the casualty to a position ¼ of a mile South of Littlehampton harbour entrance without a tow to minimize further damage being caused. Once in this position, Selsey ALB requested the launch of Littlehampton Lifeboat. (With the depth of water at that time the Selsey ALB would have been unable to enter the harbour for a further 40 minutes). Too avoid keeping the casualty out at sea for longer than necessary. Littlehampton Lifeboat escorted them through the entrance. Selsey ALB was then released to return to station. Arriving back at Selsey at 22.15

SEARCH FOR MISSING CHILD
Saturday 5th September 2009.

At 1448 both Selsey RNLI lifeboats were requested for an immediate launch by Solent coastguard (S.C.G) to help search for a child believed to be in the water on the west side of Selsey. The report had come from a 999 call to Solent Coastguard saying that a child had been blown out to sea on an inflatable and then seen to capsize and get carried away in the tide.

The Selsey inshore lifeboat (Selsey ILB) was first on scene and started its search close inshore. Then the Selsey All weather lifeboat (Selsey ALB) started its search further out to sea. Shortly after the ALB was on scene the coastguard rescue helicopter (rescue 104) arrived and started its search with coordinates passed by S.C.G. The two Selsey lifeboats were then given updated coordinates by S.C.G and asked to carry out the search patterns.
Unfortunately due to the falling tidal conditions, the ALB would not have been able to complete the new search area so requested the launch of the Hayling Island Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat to complete the rest of the search.
With Hayling lifeboat and Selsey Ilb working together the Selsey ALB re-plotted a bigger search area further down tide and in deeper water. As the lifeboat started its search pattern a local fishing vessel ‘Emma Jane’ also joined in.
While the search continued at sea, the Selsey Coastguard team searched the shoreline, beach and spoke to members of the public to gather more information.
It soon became apparent from the evidence they collected that the search for the missing child could be a hoax. This information was passed to the police; they interviewed other witnesses and confirmed that it was. Selsey coastguard contacted Solent coastguard and with this new information at 1800 they stood all units down and asked them to return to station.

Selsey all weather lifeboat “Voluntary Worker” launched at 1919 to assist a 23-foot motorboat Martinique reported to be sinking with a family of three, dad, mum and a two-year-old boy on board.

The lifeboat arrived on scene in a position approximately 1.5 miles southwest of the station at 1934 to find the two adults frantically bailing out water and the vessel listing quite badly. The mother and young boy were taken aboard the lifeboat immediately. Two crew were put aboard the Martinique along with a portable salvage pump. The pump soon lowered the water to a safe level but it was obvious that the vessel wouldn’t remain afloat without it running almost constantly.

At 2000 a slow tow to Chichester Harbour commenced. The harbour entrance was reached at 2130 at this time a distress message was received from a vessel aground just west of the harbour entrance. Unable to reach them Voluntary Worker remained as close as possible and illuminated the stranded vessel with searchlights until Hayling Island lifeboat arrived on scene.

Voluntary Worker continued towing the Martinique into Sparkes Marina where a crane had been arranged to lift her out of the water. Hayling Island inshore lifeboat was tasked to assist in getting the casualty into the slings of the crane.

LAUNCH TO ASSIST 32 FOOT YACHT “IMPULSE”

25.03.09.

Selsey all weather lifeboat Voluntary Worker launched at 2256 to assist the 32-foot yacht “Impulse” with one male crew on board in a position approx 2 miles southwest of the station.

The yacht had been observed from about 1400 this afternoon apparently making no headway and going around in circles contact had been attempted via VHF radio by both the lifeboat station and Solent Coastguards with no response. At approximately 2100 at the end of our evening training session at the station what appeared to be the same vessel was spotted in a similar position to earlier on and still circling, this information was passed to Solent Coastguard who managed to establish contact with the yacht. The skipper said he was fine and had left Burnham on Crouch on Saturday 21st March and not requiring assistance. Whilst being questioned he appeared to be tired and confused. At this time with a new gale warning being issued the Coastguards made a decision to launch a lifeboat to his assistance.

Voluntary Worker arrived on scene at 2310 and a tow was passed. Towing towards Chichester Harbour commenced at 2322 the harbour entrance was reached at 0023 26.03.09 and by 0056 the casualty was safely berthed alongside in Sparkes Marina.

35 FOOT YACHT “SHEARWATER” WITH FOULED PROPELLOR
24.02.2009

Selsey all weather lifeboat ‘Voluntary Worker” launched at 1541 to assist the 35 foot yacht “Shearwater” disabled with a fouled propeller and becalmed, two males on board in a position 400 metres south of the Looe Channel buoys approximately 2.75 miles southwest of the station.

The lifeboat arrived on scene at 1558 and put 2nd Coxswain aboard to assist. A tow was quickly established and at 1605 towing commenced towards Chichester Harbour.

At 1702 when approximately half a mile south of Chichester Bar Beacon the 2nd coxswain called the lifeboat from the casualty saying he thought the line fouling the propeller had dropped clear during the towing. The tow was disconnected and the skipper of the “Shearwater” tried his own propulsion. All appeared to be working fine so W. Pledger was retrieved from the casualty which continued on its way to Langstone Harbour under her own power whilst the ‘Voluntary Worker’ headed for home.

‘Voluntary Worker’ arrived back at the station at 1745, rehoused straight away and was ready for service once more at 1803.
