19.06.10
Selsey all
weather lifeboat was requested to launch at 12:13 by Solent Coastguard
to two vessels in trouble close to the Looe Channel buoys. The
two boats, a yacht Living Dream was being towed by a 24ft power
boat the Javalon. On arrival on scene at 12:30 the MFV Emma Jayne
was also standing by. A crew member was placed on board the power
boat to assess the condition and both boats were taken in tow
to Chichester Harbour.
At 12:55 Selsey
inshore lifeboat (ilb) was tasked to a separate casualty an angling
boat Predator which had anchored four miles South of Selsey Bill
and had suffered engine failure. A crew member from the inshore
boat was placed on board and found both batteries were discharged.
The Predator was taken in tow at 13:07 also proceeding to Chichester
Harbour.
With the Selsey
all weather boat now approaching Chichester Harbour, Hayling Island’s
Atlantic 85 was requested to take the tow of the Javalon and Chichester
Harbour patrol boat the Living Dream which allowed the Selsey
all weather boat to be released to meet the inshore lifeboat and
take over the tow of the Predator from the inshore boat which
returned to station at 15:09.
Whilst on route from Chichester Harbour to meet the Ilb the All
weather lifeboat intercepted a Pan Pan distress call from a fourth
casualty a 20ft day cabin cruiser the Brothers Grimm which had
suffered engine failure whilst anchored close to the Looe Channel.
A crew member was placed aboard and assisted with a fouled anchor
and securing a tow. West of the Looe Channel the ALB met with
the ILB and the double tow taken to Chichester Harbour. At the
entrance to the harbour Hayling’s ILB took over the tow
of Predator and Brother Grimm was brought alongside the all weather
boat and taken to Sparks Marina with both boats alongside at 16:10.
The all weather
boat returned to station and re-housed at 20:36.
Refuelled
and whilst washing down Solent Coastguard requested that the all
weather lifeboat be launched to the yacht Dream Voyager in position
3.25 miles south west of the Nab Tower on passage from France.
The yacht had suffered engine failure and the two crew members
were exhausted from beating into a head wind with one yacht crew
member suffering severe sea-sickness. Arriving on scene at 21:38
a crew member was placed on board to assess the casualty’s
condition and oxygen was administered. A tow was attached and
the yacht taken to Chichester Bar where Hayling Atlantic 85 took
over the tow just inside the Bar Beacon. The all weather boat
was released at 23:58 refuelled and ready for service at 01:00

POSSIBLE
MISSING SAILBOARDER.
08.04.10.
Selsey all
weather lifeboat Voluntary Worker launched at 2129 to assist Littlehampton’s
two inshore lifeboats in a search for a possible missing sail
or paddle boarder.
Solent Coastguard
had received a report at approximately 1900 from members of the
public saying they thought they could see a sailboarder in difficulties
offshore from Gloucester Road Bognor. Both Littlehampton inshore
lifeboats were on exercise at this time and were tasked immediately
to the area. On arrival and in good search conditions nothing
was found.
The search
was due to be terminated shortly after darkness had fallen but
a further report from two anglers on Bognor Pier stating they
thought they had seen an empty surfboard drift past Bognor pier
earlier prompted the launch of Selsey ALB and the Coastguard helicopter
Rescue 104.
Selsey ALB
searched from the station east to Bognor Rocks approximately half
a mile offshore whilst Littlehampton’s two ILB’s searched
closer in between Bognor Pier and Pagham Harbour, with Rescue
104 over flying the whole area. At 2237 the search was terminated
with nothing found. Voluntary Worker returned to station at search
speed with all searchlights manned.
The lifeboat
arrived back at station at 2309 rehoused straight away and was

the conversation the ILB “Betty and Thomas Moore”
was tasked to a suspected missing surfer off of West Wittering
beach.
The ILB was at the waters edge already so an immediate launch
was authorised at 1826.As the ILB approached
Bill point the missing person was located safe and well ashore
and therefore the ILB was released from the incident at 1828 and
resumed normal training.

ANGLING
BOAT “SARAH LOUISE” BROKEN DOWN
04.01.2010.
Selsey all
weather lifeboat “Voluntary Worker” launched at 1645
to assist the 10 metre angling boat Sarah Louise broken down suffering
engine failure with two male persons on board approximately 4
miles south of Littlehampton. Littlehampton inshore lifeboat had
been launched at the same time.
At 1724 Voluntary
Worker arrived on scene in a position now approximately 3 miles
south of Littlehampton to find Littlehampton lifeboat towing the
casualty towards the harbour. Due to the quickly falling tide
and the possible lack of depth of water at the entrance to Littlehampton
Harbour it was decided not to waste time transferring the tow
to Selsey lifeboat. Littlehampton continued towing the casualty
with Selsey escorting.
At 1746 with
Voluntary Worker unable to proceed any further in towards the
harbour Littlehampton lifeboat managed to cross the Bar into Littlehampton
Harbour with inches to spare under the casualty. Voluntary Worker
was released to return to station, arriving back at 1810, rehousing
straight away and was ready for service once more at 1845.
