Congratulations and thanks to them both.

High safety standards result in cash boost for the RNLI

The RNLI is £500 better off after staff at Southern Electric’s business energy Sales department pushed the boat on their safety record.

Staff were awarded the money for achieving very high standards of safety as part of the company’s ‘Make it Zero’ safety campaign.

National Accounts Manager, Peter Steel, from Southern Electric’s business sales department in Langstone, presented the cheque to Nick Kenyon, Area Fund Raising Manager of the charity at Selsey Lifeboat station, ably assisted by Martin and Phil. Peter said: ‘We are very proud of our safety record and pleased that the company has recognised our efforts. We decided to give the money to a charity with safety in mind and we’re delighted to hand over the money.

Nick Kenyon said: ‘It comes as a great boost to receive this £500 from Southern Electric. To go on saving lives at sea means training and equipping our volunteer crews. It costs money and as a charity the RNLI relies entirely on donations such as this from individuals and organisations.

Selsey Lifeboat Association

Souvenirs and gifts have always been a popular way for the public to support the RNLI. We now have over 735 shops around the UK and Ireland – all of which are operated by volunteers. There has been a Lifeboat Shop of some sort or the other in Selsey since 1980, starting with a caravan purchased for £200 and has a compliment of shop helpers who help make sure customers are served in a friendly and efficient way under the leadership of their chairman Ros Bonham.

After several years of having a temporary souvenir shop Selsey’s Lifeboat Association have taken delivery of a brand new shop. Getting the shop into position was a tricky job as it had to be craned over the inshore lifeboat house. Once in position it was discovered that the existing foundations needed to be modified. Lifeboat Crew member Max Gilligan took on this task after which all the services were connected and the shop fitted out.

The shop has now been restocked in readiness to open for the season and many new items will be added during the coming months by way of Sally Hubbard who is responsible for ordering new stock. The new shop was officially opened by Mr Mike Beal, Chairman of Selsey Town Council.

Selsey’s Lifeboat Association chairman Ros Bonham said “2008 had been a good year for the Selsey Lifeboat Association with RNLI Souvenir sales reaching a record £31,000. This was an excellent achievement placing Selsey at 48th place out of 735 Lifeboat Shops in England and Wales. In addition the SLA raised a further £6,500 towards the running costs of the Selsey Lifeboat. This had been achieved through the hard work and commitment of the volunteers."

Selsey’s Lifeboat Association has a 35 strong team of volunteers who, as well as keeping the souvenir shop running, go to many events around the area throughout the year selling the RNLI souvenirs. Without the efforts of committed teams like this, and all the other people who do all sorts of things to raise money to support the RNLI, we could not carry out our lifesaving role.
